I am excited to welcome you to Wichita Friends School and to our preschool department. Early childhood education is an important stepping stone to a lifetime of learning and healthy self-expression. I’m looking forward to sharing this experience with your children, and being their guide as they explore everything that school has to offer.

Children in our classroom will cycle through many fun, educational centers during the year. We will start out the year with these:
Blocks – emphasizes creativity (What can I make?), spatial reasoning (Which block fits here?), and motor development (Can I stack these blocks?)
Dress-up – emphasizes creativity (Who can I be?), role imitation (Who will be the mommy?), and social negotiation (Do you want to be the baby or the sister?)
Books – emphasizes language development (What can I say about this story/picture?), associating print with spoken word (Can I retell this story to my friend?), and sequencing (What happened next?)
Kitchen/House – emphasizes social negotiation (Should we cook pizza or popcorn?), role imitation (Who will be the daddy?), and math skills (How many plates do we need?)
Art – emphasizes self-expression (What unique thing can I make?), creativity (What does this cotton ball look like to me?), and fine-motor skills (How can I use this crayon or this brush?)

Children will also engage in these activities weekly:
Outdoor play and exploration, music and dance, scientific investigation, caring for plants, sand or water exploration, tasks to practice responsibility to self, classmates and school
And frequently during the year this class will offer:
Field trips, special visitors, cooking, musical programs, plays, collaborative art projects, interaction with older schoolmates |
